The Docs view in Astro for VS Code searches Airflow documentation, Astronomer documentation, and the Airflow provider registry from your editor’s sidebar. Each result opens as a rendered page in an editor tab. A provider registry result, such as an operator, hook, or sensor, also lets you add the provider to your project and insert a call to it in your Dag. You don’t need to sign in to Astro to search.

Search the docs

  1. Open the Docs view in the Astro sidebar.
  2. Enter a question in Search the Astronomer docs and press Enter.
The view lists the closest matches, with a summary of each. Every search returns results, so use the summaries to decide whether a match answers your question. To choose the Airflow version that results match, use the dropdown menu next to the search box. The default is Airflow 3. Click a result to open it in an editor tab.

Add a provider to requirements.txt

On a provider registry result, click Add to requirements.txt. The extension adds the provider package to the requirements.txt file of the Astro project open in your window, pinned to the version that the registry entry describes, and shows you the line it added. To undo the change, press Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z in the file.
  • If requirements.txt already lists the package, the extension shows you that line and doesn’t change it, even if the version is different.
  • If the registry doesn’t name a released version for the provider, the extension adds the package without a version.
To install the package, restart your local Airflow environment. See Add providers and packages.

Insert an operator or hook at your cursor

  1. Open the Python Dag file and place your cursor where you want the call.
  2. On a provider registry result, click Insert snippet.
The extension adds the import statement with your file’s other imports, and inserts a call at your cursor with a placeholder for each required parameter. Press Tab to move between placeholders.

Ask Otto about a registry entry

On a provider registry result, click Ask Otto to start a chat about it. For example, ask Otto how to use an operator in your Dag. See Chat with Otto in VS Code.
